Langley Community Music School's summer workshops.
2011 Summer Music Theory Group Classes
REGISTRATION
FORM
History
Students can complete their RCM History I, History II
and History III requirements this summer in only six weeks. Emphasis in the classes
will be on listening to the music that is being studied. Students
will learn how to distinguish the style characteristics of different
composers and time periods, and how to recognize the structure and
form of what they are hearing.
Students will have to study and memorize dates, composers’ lives,
and other relevant material on their own and in study groups. Each
hour of class time will have to be matched by two hours of
individual and/or group study.
Note:
Class times are negotiable and my change during
the Pulse Summer Program.
History I

This course (formerly called History
III) covers the music of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic
Periods, as well as the 20th Century, as outlined
in the current Theory Syllabus. The texts used will be either
"Musical Overview" by Linda Sheppard (www.longbow.ca)
or "The Enjoyment of Music" by Machlis and Forney (10th
edition) (www.wwnorton.com),
and the exam booklets for History 2005 to 2007
published by Frederick Harris.
Students are responsible for purchasing their own texts.
History II Middle Ages to Classical

and the exam booklets for History II 2005 to 2007 published by

music, including jazz and North American composers/performers.
The textbook is "Explorations in Music, Book 3" by Haroutounian and
the exam booklets for History III 2005 to 2007 published by
Frederick Harris. Students are responsible for purchasing
their own texts.

classes. Private, semi-private, and group classes are offered
depending on enrolment.
