2010 Summer Music Theory Group Classes


REGISTRATION FORM

History
Students can complete their RCM History I and History II requirements this summer in only six weeks. Emphasis in the classes will be on listening to the music that is being studied. Students will learn how to distinguish the style characteristics of different composers and time periods, and how to recognize the structure and form of what they are hearing
.

Students will have to study and memorize dates, composers’ lives, and other relevant material on their own and in study groups. Each hour of class time will have to be matched by two hours of individual and/or group study.

History I

This course (formerly called History III) covers the music of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic Periods, as well as the 20th Century, as outlined in the 2009 Theory Syllabus. The texts used will be either "Explorations 1" by Lopinski, Ringhofer, and Zarins (www.frederickharrismusic.com) or "The Enjoyment of Music" by Machlis and Forney (10th edition) (www.wwnorton.com). Students are responsible for purchasing their own texts.

History II Middle Ages to Classical

This course (formerly called History IV) covers a large amount of material, from Gregorian Chant to Schubert as outlined in the 2009 Theory Syllabus. The texts used will be either "Explorations 2" by Lopinski, Ringhofer, and Zarins (www.frederickharrismusic.com) or "The Enjoyment of Music" by Machlis and Forney (10th edition) (www.wwnorton.com). Students are responsible for purchasing their own texts.


Rudiments, Harmony, Keyboard Harmony, Counterpoint (continuing studies by request)

Students wishing to continue studies in Rudiments, Harmony, and Counterpoint to prepare for August exams should sign up for these summer classes. Private, semi-private, and group classes are offered depending on enrolment.
